At our school, we begin teaching letter formation in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme, which provides a strong foundation for writing. From Year 1 to Year 6, we continue this development using the Letterjoin handwriting programme, which helps students build fluency and confidence in their writing.
Writing joined-up is beneficial as it promotes a smoother flow of writing, leading to increased speed and better legibility. It also strengthens fine motor skills, as the continuous movement of the hand improves hand-eye coordination. In addition, it supports cognitive development by encouraging children to think ahead, improving their memory, and enhancing focus.
To ensure students master these essential skills, each year group has dedicated handwriting sessions each week. These sessions focus on embedding correct letter formation and teaching students how to properly join letters, building a solid foundation for clear, fluid writing that will serve them throughout their education and beyond.
